IPL Permanent Hair Reduction

Bourne Beauty is proud to offer you this professional service, from our team of highly trained therapists.  We use today's most up to date treatments and technology to provide the best solution for you.  It is important that you are fully informed about IPL Permanent Hair Removal/Reduction treatments.  Please read the following information carefully.

The Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a revolutionary and technologically advanced form of hair removal.

How does it work?

Pulsed-Light system works by emitting pulses of intense laser light into the hair follicles.  The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles (melanin in the hair) and converted to heat.  The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair, effectively quarterising the follicle. The CACI system works several times faster than most other light-based hair removal systems due to the larger spot (treatment area) size.

Is the IPL suitable for everyone?

Regretfully, IPL treatment is currently not effective on hair that is white or grey.

Other factors, which may prevent treatment, include certain medical conditions, and some medications.  Therefore it is essential that you advise us of any medication you are taking and any changes to medication during your course of treatments - it can affect your skins response!  Your therapist will carry out a full consultation to ensure that the treatment is suitable for you, a patch test will also be carried out.

How many treatments do I need?

We generally advise people that they may need 6 - 12 treatments to get the best result.  This is because each individual hair follicle has its own cycle of growth.  There are 3 phases:

Anagen - actively growing
Catagen - changing
Telogen - resting

IPL is most effective on hair that is actively growing (anagen).  There is a wide variation between individuals due to hormones, thickness and colour of hair, general health and other reasons.  It is therefore difficult to predict exactly how many treatments you may need, but the average is around 5 - 8.  You will also need 4 - 8 weeks between treatments depending on what area of the body is being treated.

Points to remember!

  • There are many more hairs in a given area than we can see at one time!
  • Anagen is the only phase in which hair can be treated effectively
  • Only some of the hairs you see will be in the critical anagen phase (a top lip has on average 65% of hairs in the anagen state)
  • The strength, number and causes of hair growth vary considerably between individuals

Results

After two to three weeks you should begin to see a reduction of your unwanted hair.  Appearance of hair growth or stubble will continue for 7 - 21 days post-treatment.  This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being purged from the skin. Hair follicles that did not contain anagen hairs will produce hairs in their normal cycle so you should return for your next treatment at 4 weeks for: underarms, bikini lines and top lips; 6 -8 weeks for body, legs and arms. While you are having the course of IPL treatments you must not wax, pluck, and epilate or thread the remaining hairs, this will negate the treatment.  It is advisable to shave or use hair removal creams only.

You should not expect to remove 100% of your hair by IPL/laser.  Due to hormonal changes, stress etc there may be follicles that were dormant or in the 'Telogen stage 'when you undertook your course of treatments and may well come to life a few months after you have finished your course.  It is for this reason that we recommend people have a 'maintenance' treatment every 6 month to a year, depending on the hair growth (if any) you experience.

The Big question...Does IPL Hair Removal hurt?

The sensation varies from person to person and with different body areas.  Often people feel nothing other than a hot sensation, but others especially with coarser hair have likened the sensation to a mild stinging.

Pre-treatment Recommendations

  • Avoid possible skin irritants such as depilatory creams, glycolic products, or Retinol for at least two weeks prior to treatment.
  • Plucking, waxing, ot electrolysis should be avoided for 6 weeks prior to laser treatment and for the duration of the treatment.
  • Where possible please shave or clip the hair two days prior treatment.

Avoid exposure to the sun or tanning treatments, before and between treatments.  An SPF 30 broad spectrum sun cream is recommended.
